Description

This course examines the age of the Enlightenment from the 1700's on, leading to and including the decline and fall of ancien régime France to the eruption of the French Revolution, with its various phases and aftermath. Finally, Napoleons rise to power in 1799 and then dramatic fall in 1815 will provide an insightful study of this crucial stage in European history and its influence on the world.  Social and intellectual history of the period reflected in literature and the arts is significant in this course also. Consideration will be given to the impact of Enlightenment and revolutionary ideals in other parts of the world such as in the American British and French Atlantic colonies.
